Cast and Crew
Sheree Chen, Production Designer
Sheree Chen has worked and lived in Richmond, Virginia, and Beijing, China. She served as costume designer on the upcoming Norwegian-American co-production "Gavagai" by award winning director Rob Tregenza. Drawn to projects with soul, she is forever taking pulses and enjoys working with people who live and breathe their passions. Her most recent work, a music video for the song "Coffee" by Boston's toil-rock trio Kal Marks, was just released via Exploding In Sound Records. Click here to check it out.
Caleb Plutzer, Cinematographer (Part Two)
Caleb Plutzer, a lover of great cinematic images, will be shooting the final segment of Right Now a Moment. His work in the Richmond, VA film scene includes work as a grip, electrician, camera prep technician, camera assistant, and cinematographer. He also recently traveled to Norway to work as the 1st Assistant Cameraman on the upcoming feature, Gavagai by award winning director, Rob Tregenza.
London Perry, Guest-Star (Jade and DAZEASES)
London is an old friend of Maurice's from their early days in film school. Today they still connect and collaborate, but London has moved on from film to music as Dazeases. Her melancholic and aggressive low-fi sound has attracted many fans around Richmond, VA in a short time. She hopes to soon be touring again and to release her first complete album. In the meantime you can find the rest of her music and her current EP on SoundCloud.
In the film London plays Jade, a friend of Kris (played by Clara Kelly) and Dazeases. She'll be performing one her newer songs within the film. Fun fact: London and Clara are real life best friends :)
Clara Kelly, Supporting Actress (Kris)
Clara Dodd is a fresh out of film school kid finding her footing both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. With a background in camera and production design, she first stepped in frame for this project. Maurice's dedication to collaboration and a more improvisational style on set first drew her to the story, and the complicated but fascinating process of telling an emotionally heavy backstory through little spoken words has kept her on board. Her ultimate goal as a filmmaker is to bridge the gap between artist and audience, and she hopes to explore this with Kris's character.
Taylor Robinson, Composer
Taylor Robinson, a native of southwest Virginia, came on board as composer to help shape how feelings of isolation would be conveyed through sound and melody. Relying on his training in classical music and his more contemporary forays into ambient music under the moniker Waelder, Taylor worked closely with Maurice to develop a musical motif for the characters of the film prior to shooting the first half. A lover of music, film, and good storytelling, Taylor is excited and thankful to be part of this endeavor, and we're lucky to have him.
Andy Kennedy-Derkay, Cinematographer (Part One)
Andy Kennedy-Derkay, a Richmond-based camera assistant and VCUarts Cinema alumni, has always been the obsessively knowledgeable and hard-working camera nerd within our circle. His expertise stretches from his cinematography for music videos (Fat Spirit, Little Smoke), short films (Take Me Home, Forever Hold Your Peace, Push/Pull), and assorted commercials all on the side to working professionally within the camera department for AMC’s Turn: Washington’s Spies. His experience and blossoming brilliance for cinematic photography has made him our first choice to capture our Super 16mm film.
Avery Foo, Production Designer (Part One)
The most fashionable member of our team is Avery Foo. This is actually his first time production designing and we reached out to him because of his understanding and passion for Right Now a Moment’s aesthetic. This quality of pinpointing the mood of a project through color and space has led him to work in wardrobe, set dressing, props on numerous films, and now as the designer of our version of Oregon Hill, Richmond, Virginia. Did I mention, he’s also an experienced editor, a stand-up comedian, and one of Maurice’s oldest friends in Virginia?
Hyekang Shin, Producer
Hyekang Shin was the first person Maurice approached about collaborating on the project. His easy-going but determined attitude and great people skills make him easy to work for. With his background on a number of independent projects in various roles, including sound, camera, and electric departments, he's got a grasp on both the creative and practical processes of filmmaking. All he wants to do in life is help and support the new generation of independent filmmakers to find their voices and get heard.
Maurice Vellas, Writer and Director
Maurice Vellas, an import from College Station, Texas, has been welcomed by the local film community with his native politeness and obsessive love for cinema. His dedication is the reason we have all decided to help him out with his very personal project, Right Now a Moment. He has worked as a freelance grip, camera assistant, and cinematographer. He also enjoys drawing, painting, and photography. His goal for this film, his directorial debut, is to create a work that explores the feelings of isolation, disconnection, and longing that permeate an aging city at a moment of tension and change.
